Tirzepatide GLP-1/GIP
Tirzepatide is newer to the market and is the active peptide found in a commonly known brand Mounjaro. It works as a dual GLP-1 agonist and GIP agonist to maximize similar benefits that are seen with GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide. Tirzepatide has been shown to work similarly to GLP-1 (semaglutide) medications but with greater efficacy. Given its weight loss properties and lack of liver toxicity, it is likely to play an indirect role in the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. This is also a once per week subcutaneous injectable peptide. This may be a good alternative for a more aggressive weight loss approach or if semaglutide becomes less effective. A monthly Mounjaro prescription can run between 1k – $1,500 which is not covered by insurance if not prescribed for type 2 diabetes. Our cost would be roughly $335 depending on dosage.
